Trip Introduction

Extension tour to Gangtey including major cities and their attractions in Bhutan. A cultural experience, visiting its peoples and beautiful scenery is the focus of the tour. Just an extra experience of visiting Gantey Gompa and explore the Phobjikha valley said to be the most beautiful valley in the Himalayas.

The festivals are an important part of Bhutanese peoples from the long ago. The Tshechu one of the largest tourist attraction is the most famous and well-known Bhutanese festival.

These festivals are celebrated in the courtyards of the Dzongs (fortresses) in all the Dzongkhags (districts) with traditional dances blessing by Lamas and Mewangs by fire believing that it washes away their sins. The Tshechu is held in honor of Guru Rinpoche, who brought Mahayana Buddhism to Bhutan in the eighth century.

Bhutanese legend has a religious significance to people and says that on the tenth calendar day the great Guru Rinpoche transformed himself into different forms to subdue demons. People dress traditionally in their finest clothing and jewelry. The festival is religious implication and community gathering where Bhutanese come to socialize and feast on native delicacies.


Trip Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival at Paro.

Transfer to the airport and fly to Paro. Meet the guide and drive a short distance to the hotel. Afternoon visits the National Museum, Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower, and Paro Rinpung Dzong. The evening ends with a walk through Paro’s main shopping area.

Day 02: Paro – Taktsang – Thimphu.

Morning drive to Satsam Chorten and then hike to the sacred Takstang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery, the most photographed in Bhutan. Here it is being said that Guru Padmasambhava landed on the back of a tigress in the 8th century. Walk back to the road point and visit Kyichu Lhakhang then continue your drive to Thimphu.

Day 03: Thimphu valley sightseeing.

After breakfast drive to Sangaygang, a field of Bhutanese prayer flags perched high above the city and visit Motithang Mini Zoo where you can see the National animal Takin. Walk to the Zilukha Nunnery and then drive to the Tango Monastery. Visit the folk heritage museum. In the evening visit the National Memorial.

Day 04: Thimphu – Punakha.

After breakfast drive over the Docchu-La pass (3050 m) into the beautiful valley of Punakha and visit the magnificent Dzong spanning the Mo Chu and Po Chu rivers.

Day 05: Punakha – Trongsa – Bumthang.

Drive to Bumthang via Trongsa is approximately 7 hours crossing over Pele La pass (3,300 m) and Yotongla pass (3,400 m) visiting the impressive Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral home of the ruling dynasty.

Day 06: Bumthang sightseeing.

In the morning we hike to visit Tamshing Monastery and Kurjey Lhakhang. We also visit Jambay Lhakhang and Jakar Dzong. In the afternoon hike to Thangbi valley across the suspension bridge and visit the Thangbi Lhakhang.

Day 07: Bumthang – Gangtey.

Drive to Gangtey via Wangdue on the flanks of the Black Mountains with an old monastery of Gangtey Gompa then come to the fascinating valley of Phobjikhaa winter home of black-necked cranes that migrate from the arid plains in the north to pass winter in milder and lower climate.

Day 08: Gangtey – Thimphu.

Drive to Thimpu and stroll through the main street of Thimphu.

Day 09: Thimphu – Paro.

After breakfast drive to Paro and rest. In the evening visit the market and do final souvenir shopping of Bhutan.

Day 10: Departure from Paro.

After breakfast, drive to Paro airport and farewell.
